NJ man arrested at Newark Liberty Airport food court in terror-related probe
Two New Jersey men have been arrested in connection with the ongoing terror-related investigation out of Detroit, according to four law enforcement officials familiar with the situation.
One of them, a 19-year-old from Montclair, was taken into custody Tuesday morning in the Terminal B food court at Newark Liberty International Airport, the officials said.
Two officials say he allegedly talked about wanting to train with ISIS and was planning to fly to Turkey to, perhaps, try to travel to Syria.
Two officials described his plans as “aspirational.” The sources said this individual was planning to travel to Turkey on Nov. 17, but he allegedly moved up his timeline after news broke about the Detroit raids. He arrived at the airport Tuesday morning with a plan to fly out at 12:30 am Wednesday, the officials said.
Given the accelerated timeline, members of the Joint Terrorism Task Force took the 19-year-old into custody at the airport. Officials have not said what charges he is currently being held on, as the investigation into a possible NJ-Detroit connection continues. He is expected to appear in federal court in Newark later Wednesday.
