Police probe source of bomb threat made to historic synagogue in Charleston
Local authorities are looking into a bomb threat at the Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim Synagogue in downtown Charleston, city police confirmed Tuesday afternoon.
The synagogue, located right off East Bay Street, received the threat shortly after 9 a.m. by phone.
Charleston police then sent their Explosive Device Team to search the building and the surrounding area, but didn’t locate anything suspicious.
Investigators are now looking to uncover the source of the threat, police said.
Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim is the second-oldest synagogue building in the United States and the oldest in continuous use. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1980 and has received awards for Historic Preservation and Historic Restoration.
