US attorney in New Hampshire adds new prosecutors on hate crimes, domestic terrorism

The U.S. attorney in New Hampshire is taking steps to prevent civil rights violations.

U.S. Attorney Jane Young said her team has received complaints from people who are concerned over instances of hate, and numbers from the state show that reports of hate crimes are on the rise in New Hampshire.

“Everybody has a First Amendment right to free speech, but you have to balance that against individuals’ civil rights,” Young said.

Young is adding a new federal prosecutor to focus on civil rights cases in New Hampshire full time, both on a criminal and civil level.

“And also for outreach,” Young said. “We are going to have an awareness campaign. Just exactly what an individual’s civil rights are so they understand when they are violated.”

Young’s office is also bringing on a prosecutor to address domestic terrorism and other violent crimes throughout the state.
