18-year-old jailed for terrorism offences after he was found with bomb making instructions

An 18-year-old has been jailed after he was found in posession of viable bomb making instructions.

Mohammed Afzal, of Preston, posted extremist material that was deemed to ‘encourage terrorism’ on a number of social media accounts. He also collected terrorist information, including directions on how ro make a bomb.

He was arrested on suspicion of encouraging terrorism and the dissemination of terrorist publications, and later pleaded guilty to eight terrorism-related charges. He was jailed for three years and nine months at Liverpool Crown Court on Wednesday (August 2).

Officers carried out an investigation into the online activities of Afzal after he was found to be posting extremist related material on social media.

Afzal was arrested in June 2022 and a number of electronic devices were seized from his home. At the time, he refused to provide the passcodes for the seized devices and he was released under investigation.
