FBI says ‘former incel’ made threats against University of Arizona Greek life
A man who the FBI says made mass shooting threats on social media targeting the University of Arizona has been arrested, according to the university and court filings.
The 27-year-old is not affiliated with the university, according to a press release from UA’s Office of Public Safety. The Arizona Republic is not naming the man because it does not plan to follow his case through the judicial process.
The UA Police Department was made aware of social media threats on Sunday, according to the university. The man was detained Monday during a traffic stop for speeding, according to a criminal complaint filed in federal court alleging the man violated a law prohibiting threats of injury via interstate forms of communication.
In the criminal complaint, an FBI official said the man “was frustrated with his homelife and decided to ‘vent’ to the group chat with his friends” on the social media app Snapchat.
The complaint said he “admitted he was aware the threats to commit a mass shooting were wrong and concerning.” It also said he tried to buy a firearm two months ago but “decided against it.”
