Maine schools target of swatting calls on Election Day; police say there is no threat to public
Maine State Police officials say reports of active shooter situations at schools made on Election Day are not credible.
Police said that on Tuesday morning, various crisis lines in Maine received threats of armed individuals on multiple school campuses throughout the state.
MSP officials said the agency is working with various partners and has confirmed the initial calls were swatting incidents intended to provoke an emergency response.
“There is presently no known threat to the students, staff or public at this time,” reads a statement from the Maine State Police.
Swatting involves making a hoax call about a false threat with the purpose of trying to get SWAT teams and other law enforcement agencies to respond.
