Maine police share photos from Lewiston mass shooting investigation but withhold vast majority
Maine State Police officials have shared photographs collected as part of the investigation into the Lewiston mass shooting, the deadliest shooting in the state’s history.
State police shared approximately 800 photos Thursday in response to a request made under the state’s Freedom of Access Act.
According to state police, they reviewed more than 15,000 photos to determine which ones were appropriate for release. Police said they were particularly concerned with releasing pictures that would cause an unwarranted invasion of privacy.
“Survivors, families of those tragically murdered, and those simply present during the photography are entitled to maintain their privacy without releasing gruesome photographs of this tragedy,” reads a statement from the Maine State Police.
