Cyberattack targets thousands of students, staff members at Baltimore City Public Schools
A cyberattack by the criminal group known as Cloak on Baltimore City Public Schools stole sensitive personal information of thousands of students and employees, 11 News Investigates has learned.
On Feb. 13, a criminal group gained access to City Schools’ information technology systems.
Alison Perkins-Cohen, the district’s chief of staff, told 11 News Investigates that the criminal group tried to get the district to pay a ransom to recover its data. Instead, City Schools officials said they contacted law enforcement right away, following the FBI’s guidance.
“This is relentless,” Perkins-Cohen told 11 News Investigates. “It’s happening all the time, and it’s really unfortunate that there are individuals out there who, you know, want to use people’s private information for their own gain.”
