Man facing hate crime, arson charges in Madison County

A man is accused of a hate crime and arson in Madison County.

Joshua Javon Morrison, 35, was charged by the Madison County State’s Attorney with aggravated arson, arson, aggravated battery and hate crime.

Charging documents state that on July 19, Morrison set a fire at an apartment complex in the 300 block of Grant Street in Bethalto. He also allegedly damaged a Nissan Rogue and hit another victim, causing several fractures. Investigators said Morrison hit the victim because of their perceived sexual orientation.

According to authorities, additional video surveillance demonstrated Morrison’s motive.

A court filing seeks an evaluation of Morrison’s fitness to stand trial.
