Deputies charge Newport man with making threat against preschool after FBI tip

Deputies say a Newport man has been arrested after allegedly making a threat of mass violence online.

The Carteret County Sheriff’s Office arrested Zachary Newell Monday and charged him with communicating a threat of mass violence on educational property.

Deputies say the arrest came after the sheriff’s office got a notification from the FBI about the online threat.

According to the sheriff’s office, the FBI says Newell allegedly posted a threat that was extremely violent and hate-motivated, against an unnamed black preschool.

Once the sheriff’s office was told of the threat, deputies went to Newell’s home and the 25-year-old man was taken into custody after an initial investigation.
