KCK church damaged by explosive device, congregation seeking answers

Members of a Kansas City, Kansas, church are picking up the pieces — quite literally — after someone intentionally shattered one of their windows with an explosive device early Sunday morning.

The incident happened at Iglesia Cristiana Bethel Church of God in the Turner neighborhood at South 49th Street and Oak Grove Road around 12:30 a.m. Sunday. The brick building sits about half a mile south of Gibbs Road in a residential area.

Police said they have evidence that someone placed an illegal explosive similar to an M-80 on the windowsill of what Pastor Walter Rosalez calls the children’s room. The blast cracked bricks and left char marks on the windowsill below the wooden board now covering the window.

Pastor Rosalez took photos of the damage Sunday morning. Shattered glass filled a small room with children’s toys and high chairs. The wooden window frame above a changing table was split apart. When he found out what caused the damage, he was stunned.
