Woman sets fire to warehouse after canceled sale to ICE; Local leaders react
KMBC 9 News reporter Andy Alcock was reporting on the cancellation of the sale of a south Kansas City warehouse to the federal government, reportedly for an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility, when a woman walked up to the site and attempted to set it on fire.
Platform Ventures, an investment firm based in Kansas City, owns the property known as 49 Crossing. Rumors began to swirl in January about the site’s potential future as an immigration detention center. At the time, Platform Ventures said in a statement that it didn’t discuss sales or question prospective buyers, but that negotiations had been completed.
Port KC meeting documents at the end of January seemed to verify the reports, noting that it had learned Platform Ventures planned to sell the property to the federal government. Port KC later voted to cut ties with the company, though Port KC made it clear it was not involved in the sale and could not stop it.
