Latest threat against Governor Josh Shapiro involve Crips gang, State Police leader says
The commitment to combat political violence has increased in recent years after the shooting of Donald Trump in Butler and the arson attack on the Governor’s Residence last year.
This week, Pennsylvania State Police uncovered a new threat against Governor Josh Shapiro and his wife, charging an SCI Camp Hill inmate with alleged gang ties with two counts of terroristic threats.
Lt. Col. George Bivens, the Acting Commissioner of the Pennsylvania State Police, described the recent increase in threats as “unbelievable.” Bivens created a special unit solely to combat political violence.
“We are keeping multiple investigators busy full time in that unit conducting these investigations,” Bivens told abc27.
The suspect, Corey Alan Bennett, allegedly wrote letters threatening to harm the governor, his wife, and the residence. Bennett remains incarcerated on prior rape and assault charges, according to court records.
“His threats involve using contacts outside of the prison,” said Bivens. “He’s been specific, for example, about using Crips gang members or other contacts that he has outside of prison to try and inflict the violence.”
