Knife rampage at Polish school leaves at least eight injured

At least eight people, mostly students, were injured in a knife attack at a school in northeastern Poland on Wednesday, with two seriously hurt.

A 19-year-old student was arrested after fleeing the scene in the city of Ostrołęka, with police detaining him near the city beach around noon.

Adrian Stupski from the Ostrołęka fire brigade told Polish news outlet RMF FM: “Eight people were injured, including five children and three adults.

“All injured people were taken to hospital. They were conscious.”

Police spokesman Marcin Sawicki later told the Polish Press Agency that the teenager was a student at the school and had also been injured.

Ostrołęka Mayor Paweł Niewiadomski said that “the situation has been brought under control.”

He added: “I am asking students, parents, and staff to remain calm and follow the instructions of the school administration and emergency services.”

The school has been closed while authorities secure other schools in the city.

A Police statement said: “Officers at the scene are determining the course of events.”
