Five people, including 6-year-old, shot during Clinton [LA] Mardi Gras parade; arrests made

Authorities with the East Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Office have made arrests following a shooting that injured five people, including a 6-year-old child, during the “Mardi Gras in the Country” parade in Clinton Saturday.

The shooting happened just as the parade began around noon, abruptly ending the family-friendly event.

Officials say one of the victims, identified as Melvina Hawkins, underwent surgery and is expected to be paralyzed from the neck down. The 6-year-old girl who was shot also required surgery, according to East Feliciana Parish District Attorney Sam D’Aquilla. Authorities say all other victims remain under medical care, and there has been no reported change in their conditions.
