Armed man with 500 rounds arrested outside High Point church during Sunday services

A Thomasville man armed with multiple weapons and more than 500 rounds of ammunition was arrested outside a High Point church during Sunday morning services after a 911 caller reported seeing him with what appeared to be a gun in a truck, police said.

Officers with the High Point Police Department’s Patrol Division arrested William S. Milliken III, 44, in the parking lot of Wesley Memorial Church at 1225 Chestnut Drive. High Point 911 received the call at about 10:15 a.m. yesterday. The caller reported an armed person sitting in a truck and said the man had a gun and was wearing camouflage clothing, police said.

An off-duty officer working at the church responded immediately to the parking lot, and additional officers arrived within minutes, police said. Officers disarmed Milliken and took him into custody without incident. No one was hurt. Police said Milliken was wearing a plate carrier, a type of body armor, at the time of his arrest.

Milliken was charged with possession of a weapon of mass destruction, impersonation of a law enforcement officer and possession of a controlled substance schedule II, police said.

After the arrest, officers searched Milliken’s truck and found several weapons and items, including a CO2-powered launcher designed to resemble a handgun, two flame throwers, two crossbows, more than 500 rounds of ammunition, rolls of black duct tape, three knives and oxycodone pills, police said.
