Juvenile taken into custody after explosive device in student’s backpack prompted evacuation, sheriff’s office says

A juvenile male was taken into custody after an explosive device found in his backpack prompted an evacuation of Ponderosa High School, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday night.

An explosive device found inside a student’s backpack prompted the evacuation at the school in Parker Tuesday morning, the sheriff’s office said.

Just before 9:30 a.m., a school resource officer was notified that a student had “possibly brought a device to school,” located at 7007 Bayou Gulch Road, according to a social media post by the sheriff’s office.

The SRO then identified, detained and isolated the student and their backpack, in which a suspicious device was found, the sheriff’s office said. In a 5 p.m. update to their post, the sheriff’s office said it was determined that the device found inside the student’s backpack was an explosive device.
