Queensland man sentenced to four years imprisonment after string of terror offences

A 43-year-old man has been handed a four-year prison sentence after being found guilty of a string of terror offences.

The man, who urged support for Islamic State terrorists in a series of social media posts between March 2019 and February 2020, was found guilty of six counts of advocating terrorism following a jury trial last week.

He was acquitted of two more counts of the same charge and sentenced in the Brisbane District Court on Tuesday.

The Logan man was found to have engaged in a Brisbane-based religious group motivated by extremist ideology, including a desire to travel to Syria to engage in hostile activities.

The Queensland Joint Counter Terrorism Team (JCTT), which includes the Australian Federal Police, Queensland Police Service and the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation identified the man had posted videos of himself on social media inciting others to provide support to Islamic State.
