Woman arrested after ‘noxious substance’ attack left people ill in Bath

A 73-year-old woman has been arrested after a “chemical attack” in Bath saw a large emergency service response called. A number of people were left feeling unwell following reports of a person approaching people with a bag, Avon and Somerset Police has said.

Emergency services were called at 2.30pm yesterday (July 29) to Stall Street in Bath. It was reported that a person was in possession of a plastic bag and approached members of the public, who then began to feel ill.

Police were called to the scene at 3.08pm, where they set up a cordon. Avon Fire and Rescue Service also attended.
It was reported that two people had been taken to hospital, but it has since been confirmed that one woman required medical treatment. She was experiencing breathing difficulties and itchy eyes. She was checked over and discharged later in the evening.

Almost six hours after the initial call, the cordon was lifted from the scene. Avon and Somerset Police has confirmed that after a search of the area, no trace of any chemical or hazardous substance was found.
