Maryland man sentenced to 2 years in prison for conduct during Jan. 6 Capitol riot
A Maryland man was sentenced to two years in prison Monday for his conduct during the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
According to court documents, Nicholas Ortt, 43, of Mount Airy traveled to D.C. on Jan. 6, 2021, to attend the “Stop the Steal” rally and protest the results of the 2020 presidential election. After the rally, Ortt walked toward the U.S. Capitol and onto the Capitol grounds with a crowd.
Once he was on the Capitol grounds, Ortt entered the restricted perimeter and made his way to the West Plaza of the Capitol, according to court documents.
After going into the restricted area, Ortt passed through a mob of rioters until he reached the police line on the West Plaza. Around 2:28 p.m., Ortt and other rioters breached the police line forced their way past, and assaulted the officers, court documents show.
