Portland police arrest man reportedly threatening people with machete near Old Tow

After an hours-long police response near Old Town on Wednesday night, officers arrested a man at an apartment complex they said threatened people with a machete.

A large police presence gathered in the 600 block of Northwest Naito Parkway in response to the incident at about 4 p.m. The Portland Police Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) and the Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) were also on the scene.

During the standoff, police said the man stepped toward officers, swinging the knife. Then he tried to walk way.

Police contained the man in a courtyard, and shortly after 8 p.m., they arrested him after negotiators convinced him to surrender.

On Thursday morning, Portland Police identified the man as 44-year-old Sony Moan.
