Explosives found in Burlington apartment linked to suspect in Colchester pipe bomb case, police say

Police have confirmed that their investigation into explosive devices found at an apartment in Burlington is linked to a previous investigation involving a homemade explosive device in Colchester.

The Burlington Police Department responded on Sunday afternoon for a report of explosive devices found at an apartment on 90 Pearl Street. Police said they confirmed that the devices belonged to Justin Perkins, 40.

Perkins was already under criminal investigation after he allegedly brought a homemade explosive device that police referred to as a “pipe bomb” to a construction site in Colchester the week prior. He has been charged with possession of a destructive device and pleaded not guilty to the charge. He was ordered held without bail until his next court appearance.

On Tuesday, Burlington police confirmed that a federal detainer has been placed on Perkins. That means that while he is not currently in federal custody, federal officials are asking police not to release Perkins as they determine whether or not he will be federally indicted on charges.
