Officers have arrested a man in connection with an explosive device found on the Oregon Coast several months ago.

Oregon State Police’s SWAT team detained James Mason Liggett in Grants Pass on Sunday, Jan. 4, according to authorities. The 52-year-old man was wanted in Clatsop County for charges of attempted murder, first-degree attempted assault, second-degree attempted assault, first-degree arson, possession of a destructive device and manufacture of a destructive device.

Previously on Tuesday, Sept. 16, officers responded to a public bathroom at Sunset Beach State Recreation Site after Oregon State Parks reported a “suspicious backpack.” Authorities said bomb technicians with OSP and the Salem Police Department also responded to the scene, ultimately rendering the device safe.
