Las Vegas man found guilty of threatening prominent public officials

Jurors on Tuesday found a Las Vegas man guilty of threatening multiple national officials after a trial with testimony from prominent political and legal figures.

The federal jury returned a guilty verdict against Spencer Gear for 20 of the 22 counts he faced, which were related to threatening officials and transmitting threatening communications.

Prosecutors said he made a dozen threats from Nevada to victims across the country between 2023 and 2024, dealing with topics like the treatment of defendants in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, border policy and transgender people.

Witnesses who testified during the six-day trial included Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-Texas, and judges who oversaw cases involving now-President Donald Trump.

Castro was the alleged victim for the counts on which Gear was found not guilty, prosecutors indicated.
