Oklahoma Election Day terror plotter deemed mentally incompetent, court rules
Nasir Tawhedi, 28, an Afghan national who plotted an ISIS-inspired terrorist attack from Oklahoma City, has been found mentally incompetent to face his punishment.
Tawhedi appeared in Oklahoma City federal court Feb. 4 with an interpreter for a competency review. During the 10-minute hearing, his defense attorney told the court Tawhedi agreed with the findings from his recent court-ordered psychological evaluation and did not wish to address the judge. The evaluation remains under seal.
U.S. District Judge Scott Palk ordered Tawhedi to undergo further evaluation and treatment at a Federal Bureau of Prisons medical facility.
Tawhedi pleaded guilty in June 2025 to two federal terrorism-related charges and faces up to 35 years in prison. However, the federal judge cannot impose unless Tawhedi’s mental competency is restored.
