Federal prisoner serving terrorism sentence in Kentucky gets additional 230 months for stabbing

A federal inmate serving time in Kentucky for supporting a terrorist organization will remain behind bars after receiving a new sentence for attempted murder.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, 42-year-old Mufid Elfgeeh was serving a 270-month sentence for attempting to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization when staff at U.S. Penitentiary McCreary witnessed him stabbing his cellmate.

Federal officials said Elfgeeh was upset that the Bureau of Prisons had not granted his request for a private cell. He then allegedly stabbed his cellmate dozens of times with an improvised weapon.

“Elfgeeh continued the stabbing through three uses of OC spray, OC vapor grenades, multiple foam and rubber baton rounds, pepper balls, and hornet nest munitions,” the Justice Department said in a news release. “Elfgeeh was only stopped when staff outfitted with protective gear breached the cell, restrained him, and removed the weapon.”
