Two bomb-disposal officers injured in attempted attack on French Mayor

Municipal employees in Fameck, located just a few kilometres from Luxembourg, immediately contacted the authorities after receiving the threatening letter. Staff quickly recognised the handwriting, which matched previous anonymous messages sent to the mayor over recent years.

Specialist bomb disposal officers from Nancy were called in to analyse the powder found inside the envelope. During testing, a chemical reaction triggered a small explosion that injured two members of the bomb squad – one sustained facial injuries, while the other suffered a hand injury. One of the technicians was treated at the scene, while the second was taken to Belair Hospital in Thionville for hearing tests.

According to French media, this incident marks at least the fifteenth death threat received by Michel Liebgott over the past eight years. The letters, often sent anonymously, typically contain incoherent or politically motivated accusations. In previous threats, the mayor was even labelled a “fundamentalist supporting radical Islam” and references were made to a so-called “grand departure” in a letter received earlier in 2024.
