Oregon teen charged for making threatening phone calls that forced multiple Ohio schools into lockdown

An Oregon man is facing up to 10 years in prison after he allegedly made dozens of threatening calls to schools across Ohio, prompting multiple lockdowns earlier this year, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio.

Following an investigation, it was announced Wednesday that 18-year-old Nathan Hayes, of Sweet Home, Oregon, made at least 17 swatting and other terrorist threat calls to schools in Ohio.

According to the indictment, however, Hayes says that several individuals, including himself, made swatting calls to 35 Ohio schools in total, leading to a wave of schools entering lockdown March 4.

Rocky River High School was one of the schools who received a threatening call, resulting in a lockdown. Other targets included Shaker Heights High School and Cardinal Local Schools in Middlefield.

During and after completing the swatting calls, Hayes reportedly kept up with local coverage of the school lockdowns and was “bragging about his terrorism.”

Transcripts that were allegedly between Hayes and another member of a Discord channel, which prosecutors say Hayes used to communicate discuss his swatting calls with others, reveal that he debated calling one of the schools again to tell them he made the swatting calls out of boredom.
