33 live bombs, stacks of guns and ammo found in home of man killed in shootout with police

Numerous firearms and 33 live pipe bombs were found in the home of a man who would lead police in chase through the streets of Jackson, shooting and throwing bombs before he was killed in a shootout.

At a press conference Tuesday, Nov. 26, high-ranking officials from law enforcement agencies throughout Jackson County outlined details and released more information about the Nov. 6 police chase and shooting that left veteran Jackson Police Sgt. Wes Stanton shot and injured and fleeing suspect Jacob Austin Hikes, 31, of Onsted dead.

“It goes without saying the suspect was heavily armed and who knows what further terror was prevented by the courageous performance of those involved and through multiple law enforcement agencies working collaboratively,” Jackson Director of Police and Fire Services Elmer Hitt said.

Stanton, whose name had not previously been released, has since been released from the hospital and is recovering at home on paid administrative leave, Hitt said.
