Bethesda-Chevy Chase student charged with false threat that drew SWAT response

A 15-year-old student at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School — working in concert with a 12-year-old in Pennsylvania whom he met online — was accused Monday of making bomb threats that sent the school into lockdown and drew in a SWAT team several months ago, according to Montgomery County Police officials.

The older teen, according to police, was at the school while the younger boy was calling in threats. “The 15-year-old allegedly communicated in real-time with the 12-year-old, providing information, updates and instructions,” said Shiera Goff, a Montgomery Police spokesman.

The real-time updates, officials said, brought some level of credence to the May 16 bomb threats compared to others that have been called into schools in the county over recent years.

The police response, which included bomb-sniffing dogs, startled students and terrified parents. Police say the two struck again the next day to make bomb threats to Walt Whitman High School and Bethesda Elementary School. No explosives were found at the schools.
